The construction of the Basilica Lateranensis started right after the victory of Constantine over Massenzio, in 313 AD. Around in 900 AD, a second Basilica was built in the same place and was dedicated to St. John, but was almost completely destroyed in 1308 and 1360. A third Basilica was built, but the last one, on a design of Borromini, was completed in 1734 with the facade of Alessandro Galilei.
