The Quirinale is one of the seven hills on which Roma was founded. On the top there is the palace that was, since 1573, the summer residence of the Pope, untill 1870, then the Royal Palace of the Italian Kingdom and now is the seat of the President of the Republic.
At the center of the square, Piazza del Quirinale, is the largest group of sculptures of the twins Castor and Pollux, the Dioscuri, and the obelisk that was in the Mausoleum of Augustus.
